WH Auden - Song Of The Master And Boatswain

WH Auden - Song Of The Master And Boatswain

At Dirty Dick's and Sloppy Joe's br We drank our liquor straight, br Some went upstairs with Margery, br And some, alas, with Kate; br And two by two like cat and mouse br The homeless played at keeping house. br br There Wealthy Meg, the Sailor's Friend, br And Marion, cow-eyed, br Opened their arms to me but I br Refused to step inside; br I was not looking for a cage br In which to mope my old age. br br The nightingales are sobbing in br The orchards of our mothers, br And hearts that we broke long ago br Have long been breaking others; br Tears are round, the sea is deep: br Roll them overboard and sleep.
