Mark Van Doren - He Loves Me

Mark Van Doren - He Loves Me

That God should love me is more wonderful br Than that I so imperfectly love him. br My reason is mortality, and dim br Senses; his--oh, insupportable-- br Is that he sees me. Even when I pull br Dark thoughts about my head, each vein and limb br Delights him, though remembrance in him, grim br With my worst crimes, should prove me horrible. br br And he has terrors that he can release. br But when he looks he loves me; which is why br I wonder; and my wonder must increase br Till more of it shall slay me. Yet I live, br I live; and he has never ceased to give br This glance at me that sweetens the whole sky.
