Ted Hughes - September

Ted Hughes - September

We sit late, watching the dark slowly unfold: br No clock counts this. br When kisses are repeated and the arms hold br There is no telling where time is. br br It is midsummer: the leaves hang big and still: br Behind the eye a star, br Under the silk of the wrist a sea, tell br Time is nowhere. br br We stand; leaves have not timed the summer. br No clock now needs br Tell we have only what we remember: br Minutes uproaring with our heads br br Like an unfortunate King's and his Queen's br When the senseless mob rules; br And quietly the trees casting their crowns br Into the pools.
