Sylvia Plath - Spinster

Sylvia Plath - Spinster

Now this particular girl br During a ceremonious april walk br With her latest suitor br Found herself, of a sudden, intolerably struck br By the bird's irregular babel br And the leaves' litter. br br By this tumult afflicted, she br Observed her lover's gestures unbalance the air, br His gait stray uneven br Through a rank wilderness of fern and flower; br She judged petals in disarray, br The whole season, sloven. br br How she longed for winter then!- br Scrupulously austere in its order br Of white and black br Ice and rock; each sentiment within border, br And heart's frosty discipline br Exact as a snowflake. br br But here - a burgeoning br Unruly enough to pitch her five queenly wits br Into vulgar motley- br A treason not to be borne; let idiots br Reel giddy in bedlam spring; br She withdrew neatly. br br And round her house she set br Such a barricade of barb and check br Against mutinous weather br As no mere insurgent man could hope to break br With curse, fist, threat br Or love, either.
