John Hegley - The flannel

I believe this society to be br deeply keen to enforce br distinctions of gender br fearful of course br of cheerful androgyny. br It starts with the naming of progeny. br Apart from a few anomalous instances br there are separate names for either sex: br "If it's a boy we'll call him Tex br and if it's a girl, Octavia." br And the con br goes on, br from codes of dress and behaviour br down to the smallest print of existence. br I was struck by all this br after a lucky purchase in a high-street chemist; br asking to be supplied with a flannel br I was politely directed to a little sub-section entitled br MEN'S FACECLOTHS.
