Carl Sandburg - Ready to Kill

Carl Sandburg - Ready to Kill

Ten minutes now I have been looking at this. br I have gone by here before and wondered about it. br This is a bronze memorial of a famous general br Riding horseback with a flag and a sword and a revolver br on him. br I want to smash the whole thing into a pile of junk to be br hauled away to the scrap yard. br I put it straight to you, br After the farmer, the miner, the shop man, the factory br hand, the fireman and the teamster, br Have all been remembered with bronze memorials, br Shaping them on the job of getting all of us br Something to eat and something to wear, br When they stack a few silhouettes br Against the sky br Here in the park, br And show the real huskies that are doing the work of br the world, and feeding people instead of butchering them, br Then maybe I will stand here br And look easy at this general of the army holding a flag br in the air, br And riding like hell on horseback br Ready to kill anybody that gets in his way, br Ready to run the red blood and slush the bowels of men br all over the sweet new grass of the prairie.
