Helen Hunt Jackson - New Year's Morning

Helen Hunt Jackson - New Year's Morning

Only a night from old to new! br Only a night, and so much wrought! br The Old Year's heart all weary grew, br But said: The New Year rest has brought." br The Old Year's hopes its heart laid down, br As in a grave; but trusting, said: br "The blossoms of the New Year's crown br Bloom from the ashes of the dead." br The Old Year's heart was full of greed; br With selfishness it longed and ached, br And cried: "I have not half I need. br My thirst is bitter and unslaked. br But to the New Year's generous hand br All gifts in plenty shall return; br True love it shall understand; br By all y failures it shall learn. br I have been reckless; it shall be br Quiet and calm and pure of life. br I was a slave; it shall go free, br And find sweet pace where I leave strife." br br Only a night from old to new! br Never a night such changes brought. br The Old Year had its work to do; br No New Year miracles are wrought. br br Always a night from old to new! br Night and the healing balm of sleep! br Each morn is New Year's morn come true, br Morn of a festival to keep. br All nights are sacred nights to make br Confession and resolve and prayer; br All days are sacred days to wake br New gladness in the sunny air. br Only a night from old to new; br Only a sleep from night to morn. br The new is but the old coem true; br Each sunrise sees a new year born.
