Rainer Maria Rilke - The Spanish Dancer

Rainer Maria Rilke - The Spanish Dancer

As on all its sides a kitchen-match darts white br flickering tongues before it bursts into flame: br with the audience around her, quickened, hot, br her dance begins to flicker in the dark room. br br And all at once it is completely fire. br br One upward glance and she ignites her hair br and, whirling faster and faster, fans her dress br into passionate flames, till it becomes a furnace br from which, like startled rattlesnakes, the long br naked arms uncoil, aroused and clicking. br br And then: as if the fire were too tight br around her body, she takes and flings it out br haughtily, with an imperious gesture, br and watches: it lies raging on the floor, br still blazing up, and the flames refuse to die - br Till, moving with total confidence and a sweet br exultant smile, she looks up finally br and stamps it out with powerful small feet.
