Sara Teasdale - By the Sea

Sara Teasdale - By the Sea

Beside an ebbing northern sea br While stars awaken one by one, br We walk together, I and he. br br He woos me with an easy grace br That proves him only half sincere; br A light smile flickers on his face. br br To him love-making is an art, br And as a flutist plays a flute, br So does he play upon his heart br br A music varied to his whim. br He has no use for love of mine, br He would not have me answer him. br br To hide my eyes within the night br I watch the changeful lighthouse gleam br Alternately with red and white. br br My laughter smites upon my ears, br So one who cries and wakes from sleep br Knows not it is himself he hears.
