Sara Teasdale - A Ballad of the Two Knights

Sara Teasdale - A Ballad of the Two Knights

Two knights rode forth at early dawn br A-seeking maids to wed, br Said one, "My lady must be fair, br With gold hair on her head." br br Then spake the other knight-at-arms: br "I care not for her face, br But she I love must be a dove br For purity and grace." br br And each knight blew upon his horn br And went his separate way, br And each knight found a lady-love br Before the fall of day. br br But she was brown who should have had br The shining yellow hair -- br I ween the knights forgot their words br Or else they ceased to care. br br For he who wanted purity br Brought home a wanton wild, br And when each saw the other knight br I ween that each knight smiled.
