Margaret Atwood - Flying Inside Your Own Body

Margaret Atwood - Flying Inside Your Own Body

Your lungs fill & spread themselves, br wings of pink blood, and your bones br empty themselves and become hollow. br When you breathe in you’ll lift like a balloon br and your heart is light too & huge, br beating with pure joy, pure helium. br The sun’s white winds blow through you, br there’s nothing above you, br you see the earth now as an oval jewel, br radiant & seablue with love. br It’s only in dreams you can do this. br Waking, your heart is a shaken fist, br a fine dust clogs the air you breathe in; br the sun’s a hot copper weight pressing straight br down on the think pink rind of your skull. br It’s always the moment just before gunshot. br You try & try to rise but you cannot.
