Siegfried Sassoon - When I’m among a Blaze of Lights

Siegfried Sassoon - When I’m among a Blaze of Lights

When I’m among a blaze of lights, br With tawdry music and cigars br And women dawdling through delights, br And officers in cocktail bars, br Sometimes I think of garden nights br And elm trees nodding at the stars. br br I dream of a small firelit room br With yellow candles burning straight, br And glowing pictures in the gloom, br And kindly books that hold me late. br Of things like these I choose to think br When I can never be alone: br Then someone says ‘Another drink?’ br And turns my living heart to stone.
