John Donne - Holy Sonnet III: O Might Those Sighes

O might those sighes and teares returne againe br Into my breast and eyes, which I have spent, br That I might in this holy discontent br Mourne with some fruit, as I have mourn'd in vaine; br In mine Idolatry what showres of raine br Mine eyes did waste? what griefs my heart did rent? br That sufferance was my sinne; now I repent; br 'Cause I did sufffer I must suffer paine. br Th'hydroptique drunkard, and night-scouting thiefe, br The itchy Lecher, and selfe-tickling proud br Have the remembrance of past joyes, for reliefe br Of comming ills. To (poore) me is allow'd br No ease; for, long, yet vehement griefe hath beene br Th'effect and cause, the punishment and sinne.
