Sylvia Plath - The Night Dances

A smile fell in the grass. br Irretrievable! br br And how will your night dances br Lose themselves. In mathematics? br br Such pure leaps and spirals ---- br Surely they travel br br The world forever, I shall not entirely br Sit emptied of beauties, the gift br br Of your small breath, the drenched grass br Smell of your sleeps, lilies, lilies. br br Their flesh bears no relation. br Cold folds of ego, the calla, br br And the tiger, embellishing itself ---- br Spots, and a spread of hot petals. br br The comets br Have such a space to cross, br br Such coldness, forgetfulness. br So your gestures flake off ---- br br Warm and human, then their pink light br Bleeding and peeling br br Through the black amnesias of heaven. br Why am I given br br These lamps, these planets br Falling like blessings, like flakes br br Six sided, white br On my eyes, my lips, my hair br br Touching and melting. br Nowhere.
