Amy Lowell - The Starling

Amy Lowell - The Starling

Forever the impenetrable wall br Of self confines my poor rebellious soul, br I never see the towering white clouds roll br Before a sturdy wind, save through the small br Barred window of my jail. I live a thrall br With all my outer life a clipped, square hole, br Rectangular; a fraction of a scroll br Unwound and winding like a worsted ball. br My thoughts are grown uneager and depressed br Through being always mine, my fancy's wings br Are moulted and the feathers blown away. br I weary for desires never guessed, br For alien passions, strange imaginings, br To be some other person for a day.
