Herman Melville - The Maldive Shark

Herman Melville - The Maldive Shark

About the Shark, phlegmatical one, br Pale sot of the Maldive sea, br The sleek little pilot-fish, azure and slim, br How alert in attendance be. br From his saw-pit of mouth, from his charnel of maw, br They have nothing of harm to dread, br But liquidly glide on his ghastly flank br Or before his Gorgonian head; br Or lurk in the port of serrated teeth br In white triple tiers of glittering gates, br And there find a haven when peril's abroad, br An asylum in jaws of the Fates! br They are friends; and friendly they guide him to prey, br Yet never partake of the treat -- br Eyes and brains to the dotard lethargic and dull, br Pale ravener of horrible meat.
