Henry Vaughan - Silence and Stealth of Days

Henry Vaughan - Silence and Stealth of Days

Silence, and stealth of days! 'tis now br Since thou art gone, br Twelve hundred hours, and not a brow br But clouds hang on. br As he that in some cave's thick damp br Lockt from the light, br Fixeth a solitary lamp, br To brave the night, br And walking from his sun, when past br That glim'ring ray br Cuts through the heavy mists in haste br Back to his day, br So o'r fled minutes I retreat br Unto that hour br Which show'd thee last, but did defeat br Thy light, and power, br I search, and rack my soul to see br Those beams again, br But nothing but the snuff to me br Appeareth plain; br That dark and dead sleeps in its known br And common urn, br But those fled to their Maker's throne br There shine and burn; br O could I track them! but souls must br Track one the other, br And now the spirit, not the dust, br Must be thy brother. br Yet I have one Pearl by whose light br All things I see, br And in the heart of earth and night br Find heaven and thee.
