Constantine P. Cavafy - Trojans

Constantine P. Cavafy - Trojans

Our efforts are those of the unfortunate; br our efforts are like those of the Trojans. br Somewhat we succeed; somewhat br we regain confidence; and we start br to have courage and high hopes. br br But something always happens and stops us. br Achilles in the trench before us br emerges and with loud cries terrifies us.-- br br Our efforts are like those of the Trojans. br We believe that with resolution and daring br we will alter the blows of destiny, br and we stand outside to do battle. br br But when the great crisis comes, br our daring and our resolution vanish; br our soul is agitated, paralyzed; br and we run around the walls br seeking to save ourselves in flight. br br Nevertheless, our fall is certain. Above, br on the walls, the mourning has already begun. br The memories and the sentiments of our days weep. br Bitterly Priam and Hecuba weep for us.br br Constantine P.
