Franklin P. Adams - To W. Hohenzollern, on Resuming The Conning Tower

Well William, since I wrote you long ago-- br As I recall, one cool October morning-- br (I have The Tribune files. They clearly show br I gave you warning). br br Since when I penned that consequential ode, br The world has seen a vast amount of slaughter, br And under many a Gallic bridge has flowed br A lot of water. br br I said when your people ceased to strafe, br That when you'd put an end to all this war stuff, br And all the world was reasonably safe br I'd write some more stuff. br br That when you missed the quip and wanton wile br And learned you couldn't bear a Towerless season, br I quote, "O, I shall not be petty. . . . I'll br Listen to reason." br br Labuntur anni, not to say Eheu br Fugaces! William, by my shoulders glistening! br I have the final laugh, for it was you br Who did the listening.br br Franklin P.
