Thomas Bailey Aldrich - Act V

Thomas Bailey Aldrich - Act V

[MIDNIGHT.] br br First, two white arms that held him very close, br And ever closer as he drew him back br Reluctantly, the loose gold-colored hair br A thousand delicate fibers reaching out br Still to detain him; then some twenty steps br Of iron staircse winding round and down, br And ending in a narrow gallery hung br With Gobelin tapestries--Andromeda br Rescued by Perseus, and the sleek Diana br With her nymphs bathing; at the farther end br A door that gave upon a starlit grove br Of citron and clipt palm-trees; then a path br As bleached as moonlight, with the shadow of leaves br Stamped black upon it; next a vine-clad length br Of solid masonry; and last of all br A Gothic archway packed with night, and then-- br A sudden gleaming dagger through his heart.
