George Herbert - The Quip

George Herbert - The Quip

The merry World did on a day br With his train-bands and mates agree br To meet together where I lay, br And all in sport to jeer at me. br br First Beauty crept into a rose, br Which when I pluck'd not, "Sir," said she, br "Tell me, I pray, whose hands are those?" br But Thou shalt answer, Lord, for me. br br Then Money came, and chinking still, br "What tune is this, poor man?" said he; br "I heard in music you had skill:" br But Thou shalt answer, Lord, for me. br br Then came brave Glory puffing by br In silks that whistled, who but he? br He scarce allow'd me half an eye: br But Thou shalt answer, Lord, for me. br br Then came quick Wit and Conversation, br And he would needs a comfort be, br And, to be short, make an oration: br But Thou shalt answer, Lord, for me. br br Yet when the hour of Thy design br To answer these fine things shall come, br Speak not at large, say, I am Thine; br And then they have their answer home.
