Franklin P. Adams - A Gotham Garden of Verses

I br br In summer when the days are hot br The subway is delayed a lot; br In winter, quite the selfsame thing; br In autumn also, and in spring. br br And does it not seem strange to you br That transportation is askew br In this--I pray, restrain your mirth!-- br In this, the Greatest Town on Earth? br br II br br All night long and every night br The neighbors dance for my delight; br I hear the people dance and sing br Like practically anything. br br Women and men and girls and boys, br All making curious kinds of noise br And dancing in so weird a way, br I never saw the like by day. br br So loud a show was never heard br As that which yesternight occurred: br They danced and sang, as I have said, br As I lay wakeful in my bed. br br They shout and cry and yell and laugh br And play upon the phonograph; br And endlessly I count the sheep, br Endeavouring to fall asleep. br br III br br It is very nice to think br This town is full of meat and drink; br That is, I'd think it very nice br If my pappa but had the price. br br IV br br This town is so full of a number of folks, br I'm sure there will always be matter for jokes.br br Franklin P.
