William Cowper - The Contrite Heart

William Cowper - The Contrite Heart

(Isaiah, lvii.15) br br The Lord will happiness divine br On contrite hearts bestow; br Then tell me, gracious God, is mine br A contrite heart or no? br br I hear, but seem to hear in vain, br Insensible as steel; br If aught is felt, 'tis only pain, br To find I cannot feel. br br I sometimes think myself inclined br To love Thee if I could; br But often feel another mind, br Averse to all that's good. br br My best desires are faint and few, br I fain would strive for more; br But when I cry, "My strength renew!" br Seem weaker than before. br br Thy saints are comforted, I know, br And love Thy house of prayer; br I therefore go where others go, br But find no comfort there. br br Oh make this heart rejoice or ache; br Decide this doubt for me; br And if it be not broken, break -- br And heal it, if it be.
