Mathilde Blind - Christmas Even

Mathilde Blind - Christmas Even

Alone--with one fair star for company, br The loveliest star among the hosts of night, br While the grey tide ebbs with the ebbing light-- br I pace along the darkening wintry sea. br Now round the yule-log and the glittering tree br Twinkling with festive tapers, eyes as bright br Sparkle with Christmas joys and young delight, br As each one gathers to his family. br br But I--a waif on earth where'er I roam-- br Uprooted with life's bleeding hopes and fears br From that one heart that was my heart's sole home, br Feel the old pang pierce through the severing years, br And as I think upon the years to come br That fair star trembles through my falling tears.
