William Cowper - Old Testament Gospel

William Cowper - Old Testament Gospel

(Hebrews, iv.2) br br Israel in ancient days br Not only had a view br Of Sinai in a blaze, br But learn'd the Gospel too; br The types and figures were a glass, br In which thy saw a Saviour's face. br br The paschal sacrifice br And blood-besprinkled door, br Seen with enlighten'd eyes, br And once applied with power, br Would teach the need of other blood, br To reconcile an angry God. br br The Lamb, the Dove, set forth br His perfect innocence, br Whose blood of matchless worth br Whould be the soul's defence; br For he who can for sin atone, br Must have no failings of His own. br br The scape-goat on his head br The people's trespass bore, br And to the desert led, br Was to be seen no more: br In him our surety seem'd to say, br "Behold, I bear your sins away." br br Dipt in his fellow's blood, br The living bird went free; br The type, well understood, br Express'd the sinner's plea; br Described a guilty soul enlarged, br And by a Saviour's death discharged.
