Samuel Daniel - Sonnet XXXVI: Raising My Hopes

Samuel Daniel - Sonnet XXXVI: Raising My Hopes

Raising my hopes on hills of high desire, br Thinking to scale the heaven of her heart, br My slender means presum'd too high a part; br Her thunder of disdain forc'd me retire, br And threw me down to pain in all this fire br Where, lo, I languish in so heavy smart, br Because th'attempt was far above my art; br Her pride brook'd not poor souls should come so nigh her. br Yet I protest my high aspiring will br Was not to dispossess her of her right; br Her sovereignty should have remained still; br I only sought the bliss to have her sight. br Her sight contented thus to see me spill, br Fram'd my desires fit for her eyes to kill.
