Stephen Crane - I Stood Musing in a Black World

I stood musing in a black world, br Not knowing where to direct my feet. br And I saw the quick stream of men br Pouring ceaselessly, br Filled with eager faces, br A torrent of desire. br I called to them, br "Where do you go? What do you see?" br A thousand voices called to me. br A thousand fingers pointed. br "Look! look! There!" br br I know not of it. br But, lo! In the far sky shone a radiance br Ineffable, divine -- br A vision painted upon a pall; br And sometimes it was, br And sometimes it was not. br I hesitated. br Then from the stream br Came roaring voices, br Impatient: br "Look! look! There!" br br So again I saw, br And leaped, unhesitant, br And struggled and fumed br With outspread clutching fingers. br The hard hills tore my flesh; br The ways bit my feet. br At last I looked again. br No radiance in the far sky, br Ineffable, divine; br No vision painted upon a pall; br And always my eyes ached for the light.
