Michael Drayton - Sonnet XXVI: I Ever Love

Michael Drayton - Sonnet XXVI: I Ever Love

To Despair br br I ever love where never hope appears, br Yet hope draws on my never-hoping care, br And my life's hope would die, but for despair; br My never-certain joy breeds ever-certain fears; br Uncertain dread gives wings unto my hope, br Yet my hope's wings are laden so with fear br As they cannot ascend to my hope's sphere; br Though fear gives them more than a heav'nly scope, br Yet this large room is bounded with despair; br So my love is still fetter'd with vain hope, br And liberty deprives him of his scope, br And thus am I imprison'd in the air. br Then, sweet despair, awhile hold up thy head, br Or all my hope for sorrow will be dead.
