Henry Clay Work - Farewell, My Loved One!

Henry Clay Work - Farewell, My Loved One!

Round me now, beneath the weeping willow, br Night's refreshing breezes blow; br Anguish drove me from a sleepless pillow br Hours and hours ago. br You, and you alone, may know my sorrow-- br You, my confidante of yore-- br You, my loved one, when I must, tomorrow br Lose forever more! br br Farewell, my loved one! br Yet once more br Let me press you to my heart; br Once, our Fate, with cruel fingers, br Tears our souls apart. br br Though you may forget it, I remember-- br Yes! for sweet it was to know-- br What you told me in that dear December, br Years and years ago. br Whisper once again a truth so cheering, br Would you not those words deny; br And the sound shall linger in my hearing, br Even till I die. br br Fondly let the last adieu be spoken, br Since we must our dreams dismiss; br These heart-linklets, since they must be broken br Break them with a kiss. br Then, though bitter tears will still be flowing, br One sweet confort may I claim, br As I walk this world of changes--knowing br You are still the same. br br While my treasure I relinquish, let me br Wish you heart-wealth that endures; br Even should you by and by forget me, br Faithful friends be yours.
