Michael Drayton - Sonnet LIX: As Love and I

Michael Drayton - Sonnet LIX: As Love and I

As Love and I, late harbor'd in one inn, br With proverbs thus each other entertain: br "In Love there is no lack," thus I begin; br "Fair words make fools," replieth he again; br "Who spares to speak doth spare to speed," quoth I; br "As well," saith he, "too forward as too slow"; br "Fortune assists the boldest," I reply; br "A hasty man," quoth he, "ne'er wanted woe"; br "Labor is light where Love," quoth I, "doth pay"; br Saith he, "Light burden's heavy, if far borne"; br Quoth I, "The main lost, cast the bye away"; br "You have spun a fair thread," he replies in scorn. br And having thus awhile each other thwarted, br Fools as we met, so fools again we parted.
