Frances Ellen Watkins Harper - I Thirst

Frances Ellen Watkins Harper - I Thirst

FIRST VOICE. br br I thirst, but earth cannot allay br The fever coursing through my veins, br The healing stream is far away-- br It flows through Salem's lovely plains. br br The murmurs of its crystal flow br Break ever o'er this world of strife; br My heart is weary, let me go, br To bathe it in the stream of life; br br For many worn and weary hearts br Have bathed in this pure healing stream, br And felt their griefs and cares depart, br E'en like some sad forgotten dream. br br br SECOND VOICE. br br "The Word is nigh thee, even in thy heart." br br Say not, within thy weary heart, br Who shall ascend above, br To bring unto thy fever'd lips br The fount of joy and love. br br Nor do thou seek to vainly delve br Where death's pale angels tread, br To hear the murmur of its flow br Around the silent dead. br br Within, in thee is one living fount, br Fed from the springs above; br There quench thy thirst till thou shalt bathe br In God's own sea of love.
