Henry Van Dyke - The Heavenly Hills of Holland

Henry Van Dyke - The Heavenly Hills of Holland

The heavenly hills of Holland,-- br How wondrously they rise br Above the smooth green pastures br Into the azure skies! br With blue and purple hollows, br With peaks of dazzling snow, br Along the far horizon br The clouds are marching slow. br br No mortal foot has trodden br The summits of that range, br Nor walked those mystic valleys br Whose colors ever change; br Yet we possess their beauty, br And visit them in dreams, br While the ruddy gold of sunset br From cliff and canyon gleams. br br In days of cloudless weather br They melt into the light; br When fog and mist surround us br They're hidden from our sight; br But when returns a season br Clear shining after rain, br While the northwest wind is blowing, br We see the hills again. br br The old Dutch painters loved them, br Their pictures show them clear, br Old Hobbema and Ruysdael, br Van Goyen and Vermeer. br Above the level landscape, br Rich polders, long-armed mills, br Canals and ancient cities,-- br Float Holland's heavenly hills.
