Thomas Traherne - Sin

Thomas Traherne - Sin

1 br br Sin! br O only fatal woe, br That mak'st me sad and mourning go! br That all my joys dost spoil, br His Kingdom and my Soul defile! br I never can agree br With thee! br br br 2 br br Thou! br Only thou! O thou alone, br And my obdurate heart of stone, br The poison and the foes br Of my enjoyments and repose, br The only bitter ill, br Dost kill ! br br br 3 br br Oh! br I cannot meet with thee, br Nor once approach thy memory, br But all my joys are dead, br And all my sacred Treasures fled br As if I now did dwell br In Hell. br br br 4 br br Lord br O hear how short I breathe! br See how I tremble here beneath br A Sin! Its ugly face br More terror, than its dwelling place br Contains (O dreadful Sin!) br Within! br br br 5 br br THE RECOVERY br br Sin! wilt thou vanquish me? br And shall I yield the victory ? br Shall all my joys be spoil'd, br And pleasures soil'd br By thee? br Shall I remain br As one that's slain br And never more lift up the head? br Is not my Saviour dead? br His blood, thy bane, my balsam, bliss, joy, wine, br Shall thee destroy; heal, feed, make me divine.
