Mary Darby Robinson - Female Fashions for 1799

A form, as any taper, fine ; br A head like half-pint bason ; br Where golden cords, and bands entwine, br As rich as fleece of JASON. br br A pair of shoulders strong and wide, br Like country clown enlisting ; br Bare arms long dangling by the side, br And shoes of ragged listing ! br br Cravats like towels, thick and broad, br Long tippets made of bear-skin, br Muffs that a RUSSIAN might applaud, br And rouge to spoil a fair skin. br br Long petticoats to hide the feet, br Silk hose with clocks of scarlet ; br A load of perfume, sick'ning sweet, br Bought of PARISIAN VARLET. br br A bush of hair, the brow to shade, br Sometimes the eyes to cover ; br A necklace that might be display'd br By OTAHEITEAN lover ! br br A bowl of straw to deck the head, br Like porringer unmeaning ; br A bunch of POPPIES flaming red, br With motly ribands streaming. br br Bare ears on either side the head, br Like wood-wild savage SATYR ; br Tinted with deep vermilion red, br To shame the blush of nature. br br Red elbows, gauzy gloves, that add br An icy cov'ring merely ; br A wadded coat, the shape to pad, br Like Dutch-women -- or nearly. br br Such is CAPRICE ! but, lovely kind ! br Oh ! let each mental feature br Proclaim the labour of the mind, br And leave your charms to NATURE.
