Mary Darby Robinson - Male Fashions for 1799

Crops like hedgehogs, high-crown'd hats, br Whispers like Jew MOSES ; br Padded collars, thick cravats, br And cheeks as red as roses. br br Faces painted pink and brown ; br Waistcoats strip'd and gaudy ; br Sleeves thrice doubled thick with down, br And straps to brace the body. br br Short great-coats that reach the knees, br Boots like French postillion ; br Worn the G----- race to please, br But laugh'd at by the million. br br Square-toed shoes, with silken strings, br Pantaloons not fitting ; br Finger deck'd with wedding rings, br And small-clothes made of knitting. br br Curricles so low, that they br Along the ground seem dragging ; br Hacks that weary half the day br In Rotten-row are fagging. br br Bull-dogs grim, and boxers bold, br In noble trains attending ; br Science which is bought with gold, br And flatt'rers vice commending. br br Hair-cords, and plain rings, to shew br Many a LADY's favour, br BOUGHT by ev'ry vaunting beau, br With mischievous endeavour.
