Adrienne Rich - Two Songs

Adrienne Rich - Two Songs

1. br br Sex, as they harshly call it, br I fell into this morning br at ten o'clock, a drizzling hour br of traffic and wet newspapers. br I thought of him who yesterday br clearly didn't br turn me to a hot field br ready for plowing, br and longing for that young man br pierced me to the roots br bathing every vein, etc. br All day he appears to me br touchingly desirable, br a prize one could wreck one's peace for. br I'd call it love if love br didn't take so many years br but lust too is a jewel br a sweet flower and what br pure happiness to know br all our high-toned questions br breed in a lively animal. br br br 2. br br That "old last act"! br And yet sometimes br all seems post coitum triste br and I a mere bystander. br Somebody else is going off, br getting shot to the moon. br Or a moon-race! br Split seconds after br my opposite number lands br I make it-- br we lie fainting together br at a crater-edge br heavy as mercury in our moonsuits br till he speaks-- br in a different language br yet one I've picked up br through cultural exchanges... br we murmur the first moonwords: br Spasibo. Thanks. O.K.
