Dorothy Parker - There Was One

Dorothy Parker - There Was One

There was one a-riding grand br On a tall brown mare, br And a fine gold band br He brought me there. br br A little, gold band br He held to me br That would shine on a hand br For the world to see. br br There was one a-walking swift br To a little, new song, br And a rose was the gift br He carried along, br br First of all the posies, br Dewy and red. br They that have roses br Never need bread. br br There was one with a swagger br And a soft, slow tongue, br And a bright, cold dagger br Where his left hand swung- br br Craven and gilt, br Old and bad- br And his stroking of the hilt br Set a girl mad. br br There was one a-riding grand br As he rode from me. br And he raised his golden band br And he threw it in the sea. br br There was one a-walking slow br To a sad, Iong sigh. br And his rose drooped low, br And he flung it down to die. br br There was one with a swagger br And a little, sharp pride, br And a bright, cold dagger br Ever at his side. br br At his side it stayed br When he ran to part.
