Galway Kinnell - Poem Of Night

1 br br I move my hand over br slopes, falls, lumps of sight, br Lashes barely able to be touched, br Lips that give way so easily br it's a shock to feel underneath them br br The bones smile. br br Muffled a little, barely cloaked, br Zygoma, maxillary, turbinate. br br 2 br br I put my hand br On the side of your face, br You lean your head a little br Into my hand--and so, br I know you're a dormouse br Taken up in winter sleep, br A lonely, stunned weight. br br 3 br br A cheekbone, br A curved piece of brow, br A pale eyelid br Float in the dark, br And now I make out br An eye, dark, br Wormed with far-off, unaccountable lights. br br 4 br br Hardly touching, I hold br What I can only think of br As some deepest of memories in my arms, br Not mine, but as if the life in me br Were slowly remembering what it is. br br You lie here now in your physicalness, br This beautiful degree of reality. br br 5 br br And now the day, raft that breaks up, comes on. br br I think of a few bones br Floating on a river at night, br The starlight blowing in a place on the water, br The river leaning like a wave towards the emptiness.
