Nick Flynn - Embrace Noir

Nick Flynn - Embrace Noir

I go back to the scene where the two men embrace br & grapple a handgun at stomach level between them. br br They jerk around the apartment like that br holding on to each other, their cheeks br br almost touching. One is shirtless, the other br wears a suit, the one in the suit came in through a window br br to steal documents or diamonds, it doesn't matter anymore br which, what's important is he was found br br & someone pulled a gun, and now they are holding on, br awkwardly dancing through the room, upending br br a table of small framed photographs. A chair br topples, Sinatra's band punches the air with horns, I br br lean forward, into the screen, they are eye-to-eye, br as stiff as my brother & me when we attempt br br to hug. Soon, the gun fires and the music br quiets, the camera stops tracking and they br br relax, shoulders drop, their jaws go slack br & we are all suspended in that perfect moment br br when no one knows who took the bullet-- br the earth spins below our feet, a blanket of swallows br br changes direction suddenly above us, folding br into the rafters of a barn, and the two men br br no longer struggle, they simply stand in their wreckage br propped in each other's arms.
