Galway Kinnell - Blackberry Eating

Galway Kinnell - Blackberry Eating

I love to go out in late September br among the fat, overripe, icy, black blackberries br to eat blackberries for breakfast, br the stalks very prickly, a penalty br they earn for knowing the black art br of blackberry-making; and as I stand among them br lifting the stalks to my mouth, the ripest berries br fall almost unbidden to my tongue, br as words sometimes do, certain peculiar words br like strengths or squinched, br many-lettered, one-syllabled lumps, br which I squeeze, squinch open, and splurge well br in the silent, startled, icy, black language br of blackberry -- eating in late September.
