Galway Kinnell - Two Seasons

Galway Kinnell - Two Seasons

I br br The stars were wild that summer evening br As on the low lake shore stood you and I br And every time I caught your flashing eye br Or heard your voice discourse on anything br It seemed a star went burning down the sky. br br I looked into your heart that dying summer br And found your silent woman's heart grown wild br Whereupon you turned to me and smiled br Saying you felt afraid but that you were br Weary of being mute and undefiled br br II br br I spoke to you that last winter morning br Watching the wind smoke snow across the ice br Told of how the beauty of your spirit, flesh, br And smile had made day break at night and spring br Burst beauty in the wasting winter's place. br br You did not answer when I spoke, but stood br As if that wistful part of you, your sorrow, br Were blown about in fitful winds below; br Your eyes replied your worn heart wished it could br Again be white and silent as the snow.
