Robert William Service - The Visionary

Robert William Service - The Visionary

If fortune had not granted me br To suck the Muse's teats, br I think I would have liked to be br A sweeper of the streets; br And city gutters glad to groom, br Have heft a bonny broom. br br There--as amid the crass and crush br The limousines swished by, br I would have leaned upon my brush br With visionary eye: br Deeming despite their loud allure br That I was rich, they poor. br br Aye, though in garb terrestrial, br To Heaven I would pray, br And dream with broom celestial br I swept the Milky Way; br And golden chariots would ring, br And harps of Heaven sing. br br And all the strumpets passing me, br And heelers of the Ward br Would glorified Madonnas be, br And angels of the Lord; br And all the brats in gutters grim br Be rosy cherubim.
