Robert William Service - My Inner Life

Robert William Service - My Inner Life

'Tis true my garments threadbare are, br And sorry poor I seem; br But inly I am richer far br Than any poet's dream. br For I've a hidden life no one br Can ever hope to see; br A sacred sanctuary none br May share with me. br br Aloof I stand from out the strife, br Within my heart a song; br By virtue of my inner life br I to myself belong. br Against man-ruling I rebel, br Yet do not fear defeat, br For to my secret citadel br I may retreat. br br Oh you who have an inner life br Beyond this dismal day br With wars and evil rumours rife, br Go blessedly your way. br Your refuge hold inviolate; br Unto yourself be true, br And shield serene from sordid fate br The Real You.
