I had a dream, a dream of dread: br I thought that horror held the house; br A burglar bent above my bed, br He moved as quiet as a mouse. br With hairy hand and naked knife br He poised to plunge a bloody stroke, br Until despairful of my life br I shrieked with terror - and awoke. br br I had a dream of weary woes: br In weather that was fit to freeze, br I thought that I had lost my cloths, br And only wore a short chemise. br The wind was wild; so catch a train br I ran, but no advance did make; br My legs were pistoning in vain - br How I was happy to awake! br br I had a dream: Upon the stair br I met a maid who kissed my lips; br A nightie was her only wear, br We almost came to loving grips. br And then she opened wide a door, br And pointed to a bonny bed . . .
