Emily Dickinson - I met a King this afternoon!

166 br br I met a King this afternoon! br He had not on a Crown indeed, br A little Palmleaf Hat was all, br And he was barefoot, I'm afraid! br br But sure I am he Ermine wore br Beneath his faded Jacket's blue— br And sure I am, the crest he bore br Within that Jacket's pocket too! br br For 'twas too stately for an Earl— br A Marquis would not go so grand! br 'Twas possibly a Czar petite— br A Pope, or something of that kind! br br If I must tell you, of a Horse br My freckled Monarch held the rein— br Doubtless an estimable Beast, br But not at all disposed to run! br br And such a wagon! While I live br Dare I presume to see br Another such a vehicle br As then transported me! br br Two other ragged Princes br His royal state partook! br Doubtless the first excursion br These sovereigns ever took! br br I question if the Royal Coach br Round which the Footmen wait br Has the significance, on high, br Of this Barefoot Estate!br br Emily Dickinsonbr br
