John Donne - Confined Love

John Donne - Confined Love

Some man unworthy to be possessor br Of old or new love, himself being false or weak, br Thought his pain and shame would be lesser br If on womankind he might his anger wreak, br And thence a law did grow, br One might but one man know; br But are other creatures so? br br Are Sun, Moon, or Stars by law forbidden br To smile where they list, or lend away their light? br Are birds divorced, or are they chidden br If they leave their mate, or lie abroad a-night? br Beasts do no jointures lose br Though they new lovers choose, br But we are made worse than those. br br Who e'er rigged fair ship to lie in harbours br And not to seek new lands, or not to deal withal? br Or built fair houses, set trees, and arbors, br Only to lock up, or else to let them fall? br Good is not good unless br A thousand it possess, br But dost waste with greediness.
