Richard Lovelace - The Scrutiny

Richard Lovelace - The Scrutiny

Why should you swear I am forsworn, br Since thine I vowed to be? br Lady, it is already morn, br And 'twas last night I swore to thee br That fond impossibility. br br Have I not loved thee much and long, br A tedious twelve hours' space? br I must all other beauties wrong, br And rob thee of a new embrace, br Could I still dote upon thy face. br br Not but all joy in thy brown hair br By others may be found;— br But I must search the black and fair, br Like skilful mineralists that sound br For treasure in unploughed-up ground. br br Then if, when I have loved my round, br Thou prov'st the pleasant she, br With spoils of meaner beauties crowned br I laden will return to thee, br Ev'n sated with variety.
