Naomi Shihab Nye - Streets

Naomi Shihab Nye - Streets

A man leaves the world br and the streets he lived on br grow a little shorter. br br One more window dark br in this city, the figs on his branches br will soften for birds. br br If we stand quietly enough evenings br there grows a whole company of us br standing quietly together. br overhead loud grackles are claiming their trees br and the sky which sews and sews, tirelessly sewing, br drops her purple hem. br Each thing in its time, in its place, br it would be nice to think the same about people. br br Some people do. They sleep completely, br waking refreshed. Others live in two worlds, br the lost and remembered. br They sleep twice, once for the one who is gone, br once for themselves. They dream thickly, br dream double, they wake from a dream br into another one, they walk the short streets br calling out names, and then they answer.
