William Jay Smith - Winter Morning

William Jay Smith - Winter Morning

All night the wind swept over the house br And through our dream br Swirling the snow up through the pines, br Ruffling the white, ice-capped clapboards, br Rattling the windows, br Rustling around and below our bed br So that we rode br Over wild water br In a white ship breasting the waves. br We rode through the night br On green, marbled br Water, and, half-waking, watched br The white, eroded peaks of icebergs br Sail past our windows; br Rode out the night in that north country, br And awoke, the house buried in snow, br Perched on a br Chill promontory, a br Giant's tooth br In the mouth of the cold valley, br Its white tongue looped frozen around us, br The trunks of tall birches br Revealing the rib cage of a whale br Stranded by a still stream; br And saw, through the motionless baleen of their branches, br As if through time, br Light that shone br On a landscape of ivory, br A harbor of bone.
