'Oh, my sweet little parrot, br Tell me, what's the secret br Of your voice and beauty br That makes everyone happy.' br br 'A golden cage, my King br Gave you, at my asking, br With gay, for you to live in' br Said, a kind hearted Queen. br br 'When I was in the wood, br I had the choice of my food. br From the treetop I saw br The sunrise with awe.' br br 'In my parrot's colony br I had their best company. br They kept me in cheers br And saw, I shed no tears.' br br 'In the forest's open air, br I had everything to share br With all my companions, br And my close relations.' br br 'Oh, my dear Queen, br What if, a cage is golden, br Or, I live in a palace fine, br Am I not now in a prison? br br 'Please grant me my freedom, br To fly free in your kingdom, br And sing in praise of you, br As I really love you.' br br The speech of the parrot br Quickly touched her heart. br She released it from the cage br Thus freeing it from bondage. br br What a golden lesson br A big country to learn? br A small country needs br Its freedom assured always.
